The Ladies XV play their home games at Flowerpot Fields on Sundays and
train weekly. We train on Wednesdays, meeting at 7.15pm at
the Flowerpot Fields changing rooms, and heading across to the floodlit
field all together at 7.30pm. It’s fast, fun, a great way to keep
fit, and the best way to make a whole new world of friendships!
We know that lots of women are interested in trying out the game…
but that only a proportion of them actually make it to a training
session. It is very hard to summon up the courage to come and meet
a whole new group of people, especially in an environment where you’ve
never played the game before, and neither know what to expect, or how
good you’ll be, or what any of it might involve.
If you’re temped, we can reassure you of a few things… and we’d
encourage you to come and see for yourself.
First, you will be very welcome. We have enough people – just
about – to raise a team. Everyone knows that everyone else, and everyone
new, is vital to the future of the club. There are no cliques
here. We value all our members, and none more so than the newest
arrival.
Second, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never played, or never even picked
up a rugby ball. Most of our players are brand new to the game, so
you can guarantee that everyone knows exactly what you’re going through.
Some pick things up quickly, others take a bit more time, but either
way, all the others will be here to offer support and empathy.
Third, it doesn’t matter what physical type you are. There are
positions for everyone, just as in the men’s game, from the broader prop
forwards, the taller second rows, to the nippier scrum half and the
speedy wingers.
Fourth, you won’t necessarily get bashed!!! Although rugby is a
contact sport, the contact is very controlled and predictable. In
many respects, it’s safer than horse-riding, cycling, or even hockey
(we’re not armed with sticks, for a start!).
Sure, people do pick up the occasional bump and bruise, but (and you’ll
need a player to vouch for this) to be honest you don’t even notice…
the combination of adrenaline and focus mean that slight scrapes pass by
without the players feeling anything or even noticing until a couple of
days later.
